Where the star rosette tray is built as a showpiece, this one is built to be used. The raised lip keeps glasses and dishes from sliding, and the burl itself is left a little thicker through the base to take the daily wear of a serving piece without flexing. At the center, a geometric mandala is inlaid in contrasting hardwood, radiating out in repeating angles that Hamid lays out by hand with a compass and straightedge before cutting each segment. The burl's natural burrs and swirling grain show clearly across the wide, open field of the tray, which is part of the appeal — no two blanks of thuya burl grow the same way, so the background pattern around the mandala is unrepeatable.
