Morocco

Handcrafted Moroccan thuya wood, one piece at a time

Every box, tray, and game board is cut and inlaid by hand from thuya burl — a rare aromatic wood whose grain never repeats, so neither does the piece it becomes.

The Material

What makes thuya burl worth the wait

Thuya is a coniferous tree native to the Atlas foothills of southwestern Morocco, and the wood our artisans work with comes almost entirely from its burl — dense, swirling growths that form at the base of the trunk and root. Because a burl grows in response to stress, no two are shaped alike, which means no two pieces cut from them share the same grain.

The wood also carries a natural, cedar-like scent that never fully fades — a trait that has made thuya prized for centuries, long before it became known outside Morocco. Combined with hand planes, chisels, and traditional marquetry inlay in mother of pearl, the result is a material that looks and smells like nothing produced by machine.

The Workshop

Three generations, one workbench

Mana Atelier began with Simohammed's grandfather and has passed from father to child ever since. Today Simohammed works alongside his daughter Amal and son Hamid, using the same hand tools and traditional marquetry techniques the workshop was founded on.
