This tray is built around the geometry that defines Moroccan decorative art: the eight-point star rosette, radiating out through bands of arabesque marquetry to a border of solid thuya. Simohammed lays each point of the star by hand, cutting dozens of small wood segments to exact angles and setting them into a recessed field before the whole surface is leveled and polished. The carved handles are shaped from the same burl as the body, so the grain continues unbroken from center to edge. It is a serving piece first, but most owners end up displaying it standing on a plate stand as often as they use it at the table.
